MacUpdate Promo
a deal a day on macintosh software
Sawmill is a powerful, hierarchical log analysis tool, well suited for web server access and referrer logs, but can process almost any log. It runs as a CGI program on your web server, and publishes an intuitive graphical user interface which can be used from any web browser to configure and run Sawmill, or to view the statistics pages. The statistics pages are hierarchical, attractive, and heavily crosslinked for easy navigation. Complete documentation is built directly into the program. Sawmill provides an extensive set of features, including a persistent database, fine control over the appearance of stats pages, and versatile log filtering options. |

egn said 18/3 at 1:58pm See no SFTP support, only FTP/HTTP so it is no a no-go for me. Plus this is a web based solution, not a Mac app. I tried it and had to download the logfiles to my Mac. I even created a folder on my Apache server and gave it read-write access but could not get this to read the log files. Once downloaded I was able to use it but I already use Webalizer and that gives me everything in 2 views (condensed/detail). So, what's the big deal here? |
derekcurrie said 18/3 at 7:44am After checking out the developer's site it is evident that this is the LITE version of the program only. Flowerfire don't even offer a single users license for the Pro or Enterprise versions. The regular price for the Lite version single user license is $99. It is worth checking out the feature limitations of the Lite version before considering purchase. |
ddemeo said 18/3 at 6:48am This is Sawmill LITE, so the description is incorrect saying it's configurable. From the description on Flowerfire's site: "It removes many of the configuration options available in the Sawmill PROFESSIONAL or Sawmill ENTERPRISE editions and in their place substitutes a default (popular) configuration..." |
merlik said 18/3 at 11:57am Seems like it could be pretty useful. Wish the screenshot above worked though. |
naj said 18/3 at 10:16am this is a very handy and powerful log analysis, but it seems to be for PowerPC only, at least this is true for the application itself |
Hawkmoon said 18/3 at 8:21am I'll try out the lite version, if I like it, I'll consider upgrading to a more featured version -- which is why they promo the lite version, and that works for me. Thank Fonix and others for your useful comments. |
Britonius said 18/3 at 7:23am Sounds interesting, thanks for the info Fonix. I will definitely have to check this one out. |
ubrgeek said 18/3 at 6:39am So long as it's better than "analog" which looks pretty contains so much information in a poorly organized manner. |

I've had my eye on Sawmill for a long time. We use standard analytics where I work, using things like analog/reportmagic on the raw log files, and we use an offsite-hosted solution for more detailed information about user trends and how they navigate through our site. But Sawmill has several of those features, and can be set up on a separate machine to download the log files nightly, analyze the data and produce reports, and then either email them or publish them using its own built-in web server.
I look forward to putting this through its paces.
